  • 1.  The accordion calls to mind Han's best friend Erik Vanderburg, who in WWI took his life to save Han's.  Han's received the accordion after the war, and it remained very precious to him.

    2.  Max Vanderburg, also known as "The Jewish Fist fighter" is a 22 year old Jewish boy that is the son of Erik Vanderburg.

    3.  Because Max's father Erik saved Han's life in the war, as a favor in return, Han's agreed to shelter Max from the Nazi's during WWII.

    4.  Max and Leisel's good relationship is based off of their similar personalities. They both witnessed terrible events in each of their families, therefore they can relate to each other and talk about their nightmares.

    5.  Max's book is called the Word Shaker. The story tells of how words can be extremely powerful.  For Hitler, words became symbols and then they became hate. Leisel used the power of words for good. Max's story shows that words can create good or evil.

    6.  Max's book affects Leisel because she learns how powerful words truly are, and that they can be very effective against others.

    7.  Rudy helps Leisel climb through a window in the mayor's house. The Hubermann's did not provide their laundry service anymore to the mayor's family, therefore, her only way to stealing a book was sneaking into the house.

    8.  Han's and Han's junior have a disruptive relationship. Han's junior calls his father a coward and states that Han's is disloyal to Germany because he doesn't agree with Hitler's ways. They both have different opinions about Germany's role and status in the world which makes their relationship troublesome.
